Snail Pace
Week number two! Or maybe three! Could possibly even be four. Time has turned into taffy during these pandemic times, I am no longer bound by conventional means like 'days of the week' or 'mornings and afternoons.' Here's what I've been up to this past whatever.
Reading out loud! Every night I grab a book and try to read out loud for at least 20 minutes into the crappy microphone in my dollar store headphones. Now, this might be antithetical to wanting to be a voice actor but I absolutely hate the sound of my own voice. Listening back to my recordings makes me want to text everyone I know and apologize to them for having to put up with hearing me talk. I do know that I'll be seeking out a lot of auditions for 'annoying and quirky best friend' though.
Workshops! Gravy for the Brain has some amazing workshops and archived videos where they answer subscriber questions. There's a lot of information to take in so I have been diligently taking notes. And by diligently I mean I start to doodle in the margins half way through the hour long videos. When I look up again I realize I've missed something important because they are talking about compression and I have no idea what that is or what's going on. So I have to scrub back about 15 minutes in the video and the cycle continues.
That's pretty much it for now! Progress has been slow as it's hard to motivate myself to really dig my teeth in until I move back to Boston and get some equipment. I learn by doing, so all of the technical how-to's and so on are going right over my head. When I'm able to have the software and mic in front of me, I'll really be able to get things rolling! The first thing I'll do once I have my studio set up is hire a voice coach, who can hopefully tell me if I have any kind of future in this business or if all of my dreams are for naught! And if that's the case, I'll probably move in with my rich tech savvy sister and her rich lawyer husband and their rich by approximation baby.
